A troubled home life, the loss of her mother to the pandemic, an aging, distant father, and longings to be loved, are all carving an ache within Beth to find a way into the Castle looming over her modest home.
‘Love Letters,’ is a medieval tale of a disconsolate young woman, enticed into a harrowing quest by passionate love letters written to her by a Prince she has never met. On her journey, she is seduced, abused, beaten and humiliated, leaving her ashamed and convinced that she is not worthy of being loved. A mysterious alphabet, along with the passionate letters she carries, encourage her to persevere in her search to find the Prince that won her heart and changed her life, with his words.
Drawn into the quest by Tzaddi, nursemaid to the newborn prince who she has raised in the Castle where he peers over the crenelated walls to watch the young girl who is oblivious of his growing interest. He begins to write undelivered letters of friendship which soon blossom into a deep, abiding love. Conscripted into the army to defend the kingdom he leaves behind the letters, begging young Beth to come be with him.
Tzaddi delivers the letters, gives Beth instructions and introduces her to the stable boy Aleph, who will care for the stallion she rides and accompany her on her journey. On this quest he serves and cares for Beth faithfully despite the warfare that is attempting to destroy the kingdom. Kidnaped by Abaddon, nemesis to the Prince, she is abused, beaten and becomes desponded. In her depression begins to wound herself and comes to the conviction that she is unworthy of the Prince. Aleph, her squire, rescues her and helps her learn how to use weapons to be part of the battle. What encourages her each day is the love letters of the Prince. As she becomes proficient, she grows in her health and confidence which she demonstrates to other of His followers.
In the final battle she thinks she will finally be united with this man that has written of his love, which is now reciprocated. Instead, she is deceived by Abaddon who attempts to kill her but at the last moment, her faithful servant, Aleph sacrifices his life to save her. As he dies she finally recognizes that he is the Prince.
This mystical allegory, is a love story written to surreptitiously get young adults to read Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, and draw them into a deeper love for God with a greater appreciation and knowledge of the scriptures.
Each of the 22 chapters is named after the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet which tells of her struggles and spiritual growth because of them. Encouraged to write in the journal, her words echo the words of the psalmist in Psalm 119. In the end, those powerful Love Letters and the inspiration to persevere have transformed her into a woman of confidence, courage and purpose.
Our culture unfortunately, has become Biblically illiterate. The Bible is the most powerful, widely published, read and cherished book in the history of the world. Psalm 119 is the longest and most fascinating, intriguing and inspirational chapters in the entire Bible.
Every single one of its 176 verses extols the power and virtue of God’s immutable word. They are divided into 22 sections in an acrostic using each of the 22 letters in the ‘Aleph-Bet’ of the Hebrew alphabet.
In Psalm 119 you can find how to be restored in times of failure; purity when defiled; correction when misguided; truth when you are ignorant; victory when you have been defeated; a song during times of humiliation; hope in times of doubt; a way to find goodness during pain; to be able to return when you are lost; a thankful heart rather than bitterness; a helping hand when you are faint; a heart that soars when you are to be judged; honey to appease your hunger; light for the darkness; a hiding place when you are fearful; a blessing from the one you serve; wonder in a drab world; holiness when you have been polluted; someone to listen when you call; an advocate when you are condemned; peace in the midst of turmoil; and most of all, a shepherd to lead you into an eternal home.
Psalm 119 is telling us that to know the Creator God, you must know His words, laws, ordinances, commandments, statutes, precepts, decrees, testimonies, and ways. In short, get to know his Word and you will know Him.

I was hooked from the first page. This novel is written in a beautiful style reminiscent of JRR Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, John Bunyan, and the like. Each page is lush with rich language that brings the setting and the characters to life. Joe Castillo has created a classic that is perfect for teenagers and adults, male or female. The heroine is flawed and full of the same doubts we all encounter, yet when she remembers to seek wisdom from the love letters given to her for her journey, she finds strength and hope to finish the task before her. I would tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil it for you! I highly recommend this book.
